Falana.jpeg

Falana

Toronto via Lagos singer Falana, draws from a broad palette of influences, including, R&B, afrobeats and pop.

Growing up she heard her parents playing gospel and Nigerian artist such as King Sunny Ade  and Fela.  But it was Falana’s own discovery of soul (Etta James, Duke Ellington, Lauryn Hill, Sade, Erykah Badu, Amy Winehouse) and more alternative artists such as Florence and The Machine, Feist and Bjork that helped shaped her influences.

A stint in Havana, Cuba, where Falana studied music and first started recording, allowed her to explore her artistic voice further and helped further shape what we hear today.

It’s this notion of old meets new that threads through everything Falana does whether that be her effortless penchant for fashion or through the genre-fusing music she creates and performs with her powerful vocals and unique instrumentation. Her lyrics like pages from her diary are intimate and direct, but delivered with power and meaning. She sees her work as the intersection of contemporary and vintage, both sonically and visually - where the old meets and inspires the new.
