Bristol Live sees the two home-grown new music brands come together to showcase some of the best in R&B, Soul and Rap.

THE PIT LDN:

Pit London is the brain-child of Tramell “Darkstepper” Mugarura and Alfred Afari, two childhood friends that share a passion for quality home-grown music. Since the launch, The Pit London have produced a multitude of events touching each corner of London including The Playlist Party UK & Genre Clash. The Pit London curate eclectic line-ups celebrating a range of genres. From R’n’B and Neo-Soul to Hip Hop and Grime, this is music leaving an imprint.

ILUVLIVE:

iluvlive is a live music and artist development platform. We are a not-for-profit National Portfolio Organisation funded by Arts Council England and have been operating since 2004.

Initially a London-based showcase hosted by Ras Kwame and Twin B, we supported Ed Sheeran, Jessie J, Tinie Tempah, Emeli Sande, Chip, Wretch 32, Katy B, Ray Blk, Izzy Bizu, Little Simz, Ms Banks, Kojey Radical, Ella Mai, Tom Grennan, Shakka, Mahalia and Plan B to name a few - often on numerous occasions and years before they were signed.

KADEEM TYRELL:

British R&B/Soul singer, Kadeem Tyrell, is making waves in the UK music scene. Born and raised in Battersea, Kadeem epitomises the alternative sound that is currently on the rise, described as soothing alternative soul & effortless R&B. Heavily influenced by A Tribe Called Quest, Aaliyah, Brandy & many more artists from the 90's era, Kadeem put pen to paper at the young age of 14, challenging his writing skills and seeing how far he could take his vocal ability.

CHIKAYA:

Chikaya is showing us that Bristol is not just about the DJ’s or producers but also the home to great traditional musical talent. The originator of what she coins as “Cosmic Trap”, Chikaya dropped her latest EP 'Descend' in 2018 which takes you on a journey of spacey beats and playful lyrics. Chikaya has an amazing soulful voice that brings you gently back down to Earth. She has performed around the country and recently performed at Boomtown!

D£DW8:

Straight outta the well established musical melting pot of Bristol, Dee Green and Bewbonik – AKA Bailey’s Brown and Blanka – have been making waves on the local scene and beyond for years. Dee has been responsible for a string of solo releases, as well as projects with the likes of Datkid, Lee Scott and Black Josh. Bewbonik is probably best known as one of the MCs in the mighty Bristol collective Split Prophets, but he is also a skilled producer, having crafted beats for a number of projects over the years. Together they form Dedw8, refusing to be categorized or limited by labels, raising a solid middle finger to genre obsessed critics and purists. This is distorted vocals, dirty bass lines, dark samples and heavy drums, as if Tyler the Creator had come up in the UK grime scene.

ANNA LISA:

Anna Lisa is a Bristol-based singer-songwriter and producer, who has spent the last few years cultivating her sound and paving the way for her solo career to take flight.

Having already made it into the Top 20 of the MOBO Unsung competition in 2016,

Anna Lisa’s distinctive, haunting vocal style continues to bring her recognition as she readies herself for a string of forthcoming releases.

Drawing on influence from grime, rnb, dubstep, trap and hip hop as a whole – from both the UK and US - alongside co-writer and producer MUSSI, she has reinvented herself and fine tuned her talents. The result is a deeply personal sound and style, with Anna Lisa weaving stories of emotional battles, heartbreak and unrestricted resentment within her music.

You can expect to hear a lot from her corner in the coming months, with four singles under her belt, as well as her first music video, her debut E.P: Unfollowed, is scheduled for release in early September 2019. All of that, plus her first festival appearances at Glastonbury 2019 and St Pauls Carnival as well as a run of upcoming gigs and other shows, make Anna Lisa one to watch in 2019 and beyond.

iluvlive presents Jean-Mikhael at the Servant Jazz Quarters, London on Wednesday 2nd October 2019.

“I leave my stamp everywhere I go” states Jean-Mikhael with quiet confidence. “I would never want someone to hear me on the radio, and for them to say ‘who’s that?’”

Growing up in London, JM was plunged into a family bursting with creativity. His Grenadian-born mother worked as Boney M.’s hair stylist back in the day and passed on the tales of Jean-Mikhael’s late grandad - a saxophonist who played in Chicago’s live music scene - to the rest of the family. His dad, who lives in France, was also musical, and from day one he was surrounded by relatives mastering everything from making ballet shoes to playing the accordion. “Everything was creative,” he explains.

It’s a lesson JM has carried with him to the present day. As well as taking influence from Michael Jackson - whose shoes he occupied for 8 months as a young actor - he continually finds himself looking to Prince, Beyoncé, and TLC; all formidable artistic powerhouses who command stages with the sheer force of their personalities, express themselves with bold fashion, and who refuse to be contained within boxes. “Everything has to be a show,” he says. “As an artist, image is everything.”

Debut EP ‘The Deal’ is all about boundless expression. Theatricality and striking visuals centre his music; a diverse melting pot of sensual R'n'B, intimate songwriting and innovative, glossy pop production. Songwriting - at once exposed and empowering - draws on past troubles, and emerges from the storm with his head held high.

FALANA Toronto via Lagos singer Falana, draws from a broad palette of influences, including, R&B, afrobeats and pop. Growing up she heard her parents playing gospel and Nigerian artist such as King Sunny Ade and Fela. But it was Falana’s own discovery of soul (Etta James, Duke Ellington, Lauryn Hill, Sade, Erykah Badu, Amy Winehouse) and more alternative artists such as Florence and The Machine, Feist and Bjork that helped shaped her influences. A stint in Havana, Cuba, where Falana studied music and first started recording, allowed her to explore her artistic voice further and helped further shape what we hear today. It’s this notion of old meets new that threads through everything Falana does whether that be her effortless penchant for fashion or through the genre-fusing music she creates and performs with her powerful vocals and unique instrumentation. Her lyrics like pages from her diary are intimate and direct, but delivered with power and meaning. She sees her work as the intersection of contemporary and vintage, both sonically and visually - where the old meets and inspires the new.

Falana.jpeg

Falana

Toronto via Lagos singer Falana, draws from a broad palette of influences, including, R&B, afrobeats and pop.

Time: 7.30pm doors - 11pm

Tobi is of Nigerian origin, but moved to Manchester at the age of sixteen in which his passion for music developed at his local youth centre studio. Since this, the young artist has been named as MOBO’s ‘One to Watch’, as well as being championed by notable radio DJ’s including Huw Stephens and Mistajam.

Since emerging into the ever-competitive music scene, Tobi has worked with many legends in the game including Joe Hertz, Bipolar Sunshine and Wretch 32 to name a few.

Not one to put a limit on his success, Tobi is about to be one of the faces of the latest Reebok Classic Collective campaign alongside Lotto Boyzz and Snoochie Shy launching in JD stores across the UK and Europe in September 2018. As part of the campaign Tobi ran a workshop in Manchester on August 21st where one emerging artist was selected to perform alongside Tobi at the Reebok Classic Collective Party in London in December. Look out for the workshop highlights video featuring Tobi’s new single ‘Be My Lover’ coming soon.

Tobi says of first single ‘Be My Lover’,  ‘The track is about love that is broken but it’s love regardless and that love keeps us connected”. He further explains of the video that accompanies the track, ‘the floating broken pieces of piano at my feet at the end is symbolic of the broken pieces of this love.’

It’s also a marker of the serious credentials of Manchester rap. Tobi tears open a hole in the scene and starkly makes his claim as one of the most genuinely exciting acts this year.

With the continued support from publications and his fans, Tobi has announced two headline shows; Manchester’s Soup Kitchen on 14th November and London’s Servant Jazz Quarters on 20th November.

J Webb

J Webb is a self-employed model, performer and business woman who is as savvy as she is sassy. She says, “as an artist, I want my music to serve the same qualities which I needed as a child, an expression of all emotions and most importantly the love of self.... strong, confident, sexually confident and above all, true to how I feel... no sugar coating.” From an early age, music truly served its purpose in J Webb’s life. She was dependent on music to help her cope with strong emotions, happy, sad, in love or angry... music always held the invisible answer. J Webb was an instant hit as a model and she has driven her own career from the start. She says, “being a self-employed woman was the greatest gift I could have given to myself. But now I’m ready to make music again.” J Webb reconnected with a producer she’d known since she was 16. The pair had worked on a demo together which landed J Webb a deal with Sony.

Tobi is of Nigerian origin, but moved to Manchester at the age of sixteen in which his passion for music developed at his local youth centre studio. Receiving support from local press including the THE METRO and MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS, Tobi’s talent was supported from day one.
